Tips to Defog Your Windshield in Warm and Cold Temperatures

defog your windshield

If you’ve ever wondered why your car windows fog up, then you’re not alone! Temperature differences, air quality, more passengers in your ride, and a dirty windshield are all causes for you to defog your windshield. Let’s dig into the best ways to defog your windshield so you can drive safely around Charlotte.

How to Defog Your Windshield

There are different techniques to defog your windshield based on the temperature outside. Here’s what to do in warm weather vs cold weather.

How to Defog Windshield in Summer

Summer in North Carolina comes with unpredictable weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and humidity is guaranteed – both of which can cause your windshield to fog up. Here’s how to fix that.

  • Use your windshield wipers: By using your windshield wipers, you’ll immediately reduce the fog on your car’s glass and can have some more visibility on the road.
  • Turn down your AC unit: If you lower your air conditioner to the coolest temperature, then this should balance the warm air that’s outside of your car.
  • Turn off the recirculation button: If you switch off the air recirculation button, then this will reduce the humidity in the car, allowing the fog on your windshield to clear.

How to Defog Windshield in Winter

Even if our winters aren’t as intense as our scorching summers, we still get freezing temperatures, ice, and snow here in the Charlotte area. Here’s what to do when you get in your car on a frosty day and your windshield is completely fogged up.

  • Turn on the AC unit: If you turn your AC to full blast and crank up the heat to the highest setting, then this will help! This will help pull the moisture from the outside air and pump up your visibility in no time. As you might expect, heating up the windshield in this way can also help with defrosting if there are ice crystals on the glass.
  • Turn off recirculation: Just like in the summer, turning off your recirculation can help reduce fog. Fog results from humidity collecting on the windshield. If you turn off the recirculation, it will allow cooler and dryer air inside of the cabin.
  • Crank your windows down: We know, opening your windows on a cold day seems silly – but it can help defog your windshield faster! Doing this will let allow the humid air out and the fresh air in, and your windshield should clear more quickly.
  • Push the defrost button: The last step you can take to defog your windshield is to turn on the car defroster button. This will send warm air across your windshield and evaporates moisture that’s on your windshield.

Keeping Fog from Forming

To help reduce instances of a fogged-up windshield, use ammonia-based window cleaner and shaving cream when cleaning the inside of your car windows. These products repel water, making them perfect for preventing fog. It’s also good practice to wipe off your shoes before you enter your car (to prevent the amount of moisture that is brought into the cabin). Still having issues with fog?
