Buying an Electric Car? Avoid the Following Mistakes!

October 5th, 2020 by

Getting an eco-friendly car is a great way to contribute to the N Charlotte Toyota initiative of “going green”. If you’re considering getting an electric car to hit the road, there are a couple of things you should take into consideration before you sign that dotted line. Toyota of N Charlotte has compiled a list of 5 mistake NOT to make when you’re shopping for one of these alternative fuel vehicles. Check it out!

Don’t Make These Mistakes When Buying an Electric Car

Toyota of N Charlotte discusses mistakes to avoid when buying an electric car.

1. Not taking budget into consideration
If you didn’t already know, electric cars are more expensive than hybrid and traditional gasoline vehicles. Mostly because of all the innovative tech they’ve got going on under the hood as well as inside the cabin. With this in mind, make sure you have the money to fund this. The last thing you need is to be stuck in a car payment you can’t afford. It’s also not just about how much the car costs, also consider car insurance and car maintenance.

2. Not looking for federal incentives
Are you aware that there are available federal tax credits for EV cars bought in the United States? Do your research in time for the next tax season, and you may be eligible for a decent refund. You can factor that into your decision of purchasing an electric car.

3. Not considering your commute
Similar to the way traditional gasoline cars can only go so far on a tank of gas, electric cars only go so far on one charge. Do research on the “range” the model you’re looking into… How far would you be able to travel on one charge? Keep in mind that if your school or work doesn’t have a charging station, you have to make it back home.

4. Not taking into account your local climate
If you live in an area that experiences harshly cold weather, this can have an effect on your N Charlotte EV performance. This is because the battery doesn’t charge as well in very cold conditions. They don’t hold the charge either. Evidently, this will have a negative impact on your car’s range and performance. If you live in the N Charlotte area, consider asking one of our Toyota service techs for their opinion on whether it’s worth buying an EV vehicle.

5. Not evaluating ALL of your drive time needs
Consider all of your drive time needs before you decide to buy an electric car. Do you need a spacious interior? Space for cargo? Off-roading capabilities? Make a list that includes al of your drive time needs to see if going green is worth buying.

All in all, at Toyota of N Charlotte, we recommend doing your research before making a final decision on purchasing not only an EV, but also any other type of vehicle.
