Toyota electric vehicle news for 2023 so far

Toyota is pivoting its long-term electric car strategy. You may have heard that Akio Toyoda, the CEO of Toyota, stepped down from his position in January. Koji Sato stepped in to fill the role, and since stepping into the CEO position has expressed a large interest in expanding Toyota’s EV design and production in order to integrate more Toyota full electric vehicles into the day-to-day lineup. Toyota – supposedly – recently disassembled a Tesla Model Y in order to better see and understand the manufacturing techniques that Tesla uses in their cars. (This is a common practice among automakers, apparently.) What they find + implement could affect future EV models, design, manufacturing, and production processes and change the way the EV lineup looks in a big way, so stay tuned.
Toyota and Lexus are collaborating on a new EV platform. As of right now, Toyota full electric vehicles sit on the e-TNGA platform. This slightly modified platform is commonly used for a lot of Toyota’s gas-powered cars, but it’s not the best-suited platform for their EVs. It limits the size of the battery pack for the car, which in turn limits the range that the Toyota electric vehicle can travel before needing to be charged. Toyota and Lexus recently announced that they’ll be working on a joint venture of a new solely electric platform for their EVs that can accommodate a larger battery pack and more. This should result in more range for each vehicle, and also the possibility of more new models being introduced to the lineup. Rumor has it that this new platform for Toyota electric vehicles should be finished by 2026, and we’ll keep you posted.
China has a new Toyota bZ3 sedan in its lineup. We’ve discussed before the new bZ (Beyond Zero) lineup that Toyota is building out to offer Toyota full electric vehicles to its consumers. As of right now, the only bZ products in America are the 2023 Toyota bZ4X and a Toyota bZ SUV concept (there’s no guarantee that one is going into production, though). China, on the other hand, just got the second official member of the Beyond Zero family: the 2023 Toyota bZ3. This new Toyota fuel electric vehicle is actually a collaboration with BYD, a globally renowned EV brand. The Toyota bZ3 is built on the Toyota e-TNGA platform but features BYD’s lithium-ion battery, motor, and electric control system, which means that the range is extended to an incredible 372 miles on one charge. Additionally, the MSRP is lower than normal at around $27,700 USD. There’s no word that we’ll see this new Toyota full electric vehicle on the lot at Toyota of N Charlotte any time soon, but we do know that Toyota is planning to majorly expand its bZ lineup in the U.S. in the future.
