Tips if You’re Driving in a Tornado

Some tornado warning signs you should be on the lookout for are the following:

  • Large hail and heavy rain that follows a calm period. Then, the wind will pick up unexpectedly.
  • Low, dark clouds that seem to be rotating.
  • Rumbling sounds that are like a freight train.
  • Swirling debris on the ground.

At Toyota of N Charlotte, we’ve created a list of tips to follow if you find yourself driving in a tornado. Let’s dig in!

Tip #1 Get Off the Road.

We know if you see a tornado, the first thought that comes to mind is, “RUN FOR COVER!” And, mix in some high anxiety and some unsettling stomach noises. But, just try to remain calm if you’re driving in a tornado, and if you can and get off of the road. It’s way better to get off the road, rather than pulling over and waiting for it to pass.

Tip #2 Avoid Underpasses.

Another great Charlotte Toyota tip if you’re driving in a tornado is to avoid overpasses. You might think it might be a good idea to hide under a bridge or tunnel, but it’s actually the opposite of what you should do. These bridges and underpasses create high winds and debris can easily fly under there and harm you.

Tip #3 Stay Low.

Also, if you find yourself driving in a tornado, you should stay low. Be sure not to leave your car, keep your seatbelt on, and try to put your head down. If you can, try to keep your head beneath the window, and cover your head with your hands or a blanket if you have a spare one. If you keep a Charlotte Toyota emergency kit in your car, then you should have a blanket you can whip out of that bag.

Tip #4 Seek Shelter.

At Toyota of N Charlotte, we know that if you’re driving in a tornado, then it might not be possible to seek shelter. However, if you can, then try to take cover in a truck stop, convenience store, restaurant, or even a walk-in cooler. Once inside, don’t forget to try to grab something soft to cover your head.
