Care for your car while you stay at home

April 2nd, 2020 by

As Mecklenburg County recently issued a stay-at-home order that extends through the end of April, you may find yourself driving your car a lot less frequently. It can be a little jarring for people, especially if you’re someone who commutes to work or school on a daily basis. Toyota of N Charlotte is here to help. Did you know that while your car is in quarantine you still have to perform essential car care tasks to keep it in running order? Check out these tips from our N Charlotte Toyota service techs on how to keep it in top shape even if you’re not hitting the road.

Use these 5 car care tips to protect your ride during quarantine

Tip #1: Start it periodically to protect the battery.

If your ride is sitting in the driveway for the duration, you’ll still want to go out and start it periodically (at least once a week) to keep the battery juiced up and ready to go. This will prevent the battery from going flat so you’re ready to hit the road as soon as you need to. Short drives also help (and are a great way to escape your family or roommates for a few minutes) – take your car around the block a few times as part of its car care.

Tip #2: Move it from time to time to avoid tire issues.

When sitting in one spot, your tires can develop soft flat spots. Our Charlotte auto service experts recommend rolling your car back and then forward every few days so the tires aren’t putting pressure on the same spots all the time. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the tire pressure to ensure they’re not losing air, and to keep them inflated to the proper PSI.

Tip #3: Top off the gas now.

If your gas tank isn’t full, it can develop condensation inside of it. This can cause problems for you down the road, so it’s smart to fill the tank BEFORE you go into quarantine. If you’re concerned about it, you can even look for a fuel additive to maintain the integrity of the fuel. Our Charlotte car care experts can help you choose the right ones.

Tip #4: Consider covered parking.

Covered parking is best when it comes to keeping your ride in one spot for an extended period of time. A garage, a carport, or even a shady spot will help protect your car from UV rays that can damage the paint and fade the interior. If nothing else, you may want to get a car cover to protect it when it’s not in use.

Tip #5: Keep an eye on things under the hood and double check them before you drive.

When you’re free to hit the road again, take peek under the hood. Check fluids like your oil, coolant, and transmission fluid before you head out, and ensure all of your belts and hoses are still in good condition.
