We’re so ready for summer – how about you? The weather is warming up and spring is in the air, which means it’s the perfect time to start planning a road trip to the beach. Toyota of N Charlotte is here to help (as usual). Check out our list of some of the best beaches to road trip to this year.

We know road trips take time, which is why we based our list primarily on the east coast (a road trip to California is a lot – doable, but a lot). Don’t forget to pack sunscreen!

Six of the best beaches to plan a road trip to

#1: Outer Banks: The Outer Banks are a short road trip to take, but enough of one to get away from it all. There are 200 miles of shoreline to explore, and activities abound – you can boat, swim, surf, fish, and skimboard. Plus, the pier at Nag’s Head is perfect for watching sunrises and sunsets, and there’s also a lot of history to explore. See where the Wright brothers took their first flight and Blackbeard fought his last battle. The Outer Banks are around 6 hours from Huntersville.

North Carolina beaches

#2: Ocean City: Ocean City, MD is a fun-seekers paradise. Not only are there beautiful beaches to explore – they’re wide and the sand is soft – the boardwalk that runs alongside them is half the fun. Try the world-famous crab, play arcade games, shop for souvenirs, and get your thrills at the amusement park. Huntersville is around 8 hours from Ocean City.

#3: Hilton Head: Head south – to South Carolina, that is – to check out Hilton Head. The beaches here are hard-packed, which makes them perfect for biking, running, and walking long stretches. It’s a barrier island that’s packed with fine dining, boutique hotels, and posh shops. If you need a break from the beach, check out the spas and golf courses that stud the island. Huntersville is around four hours from Hilton Head.

#4: Golden Isles: The Golden Isles are in Georgia are actually a set of four islands – Sea Island, Jekyll Island, St. Simon’s Island, and Little St. Simon’s Island. They’re famous for beautiful driftwood that’s washed up on the shores as well as long, uninterrupted stretches of beach that are perfect for walking and biking. Plus, the towns are quaint and filled with local shops and restaurants. Huntersville is around five hours from the Golden Isles.

Driftwood beaches

#5: Destin: Want turquoise waters and white sand beaches like you’re in the Caribbean? Head to Florida – Destin, a city in the panhandle, is renowned for both. The beaches are beautiful and wide, and offshore you can find exceptional Red Snapper and Grouper fishing. Plus, there are nature trails to hike and plenty of places to swim in the warm gulf waters. Huntersville is around 9.5 hours from Destin, so if you need a pit stop, be sure to plan ahead for a place to spend the night.

Florida beaches

#6: Amelia Island: Amelia Island is on the opposite side of Florida on the Atlantic Ocean, so it offers a bit of a different beach experience. There are 13 miles of beach to explore here, and tons of opportunities for outside activities – you can kayak, swim, surf, play volleyball, and even horseback ride on the beach. It’s a quieter community and a great place to relax. Huntersville is around six hours from Amelia Island.
