Different Ways to Check Tire Tread

Before we get into it, you should always check your tread depth every 3,000 miles or once it reaches 4/32 inches deep. If your car tires reach 2/32 inches or less, then you should come to Toyota of N Charlotte right away and get some new wheels on your ride.

Test #1 Penny Test

The first way you can check your Charlotte Toyota tread depth is by using a penny. And, who doesn’t have one of these sitting in a change pot on their counter? Simply take the penny, and insert Lincoln’s head upside down, facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, then your tread depth is less than 2/32 inches. With depth this low, you’ll want to immediately stop by our dealership.

Test #2 Quarter Test

Another way to check your Charlotte Toyota tire tread is to use a quarter. This is something that you probably have around your house, and won’t have to go out of your way to get. You can check this by placing the quarter in your car tire with Washington’s head upside down and facing you. If the tire tread touches Washington’s head, then you have less than 4/32 inches of tread left. This means it’s time to come get your wheels changed soon.

Test #3 Built-in Indicator

You can also check your tire tread by the built-in indicator. You’ll be able to find the indicator less than an inch from the bottom of the tread groove. If the tire tread wears down to the point that it’s even with this level, then you should get your tire replaced.

Test #4 Tread Depth Gauge

The last way to check your Charlotte Toyota tire tread is to use a tread depth gauge. Most of these tools will measure in 32nds of an inch or 25-26 millimeters. This little tool is super handy and is very easy to use. If your tire is on red (then get your tires changed ASAP), if your tire is on the yellow part (then get your tires changed soon), and if your tire is on the green part (then you’re good to go).
