Do you know where to find the VIN number on your car?
If you’ve bought or sold a car, you’ve probably heard the term VIN. Your VIN – or vehicle identification number – is also commonly called a VIN number. So what exactly is it, why should you know yours, and how do you know where to find the VIN number? Our N Charlotte Toyota sales experts are here to tell you everything you need to know.
VIN numbers: What are they?
Before you can understand why it’s important to know your car’s VIN, you should know exactly what it is. Basically, a VIN is a series of 17 numbers and letters and it’s assigned to each car by the automotive manufacturer. (In cars made before 1981, you may see fewer than 17 characters.)
This series of numbers and letters is completely unique to your car (think of it similar to DNA) and will never change over your car’s lifetime. But what do these numbers and letters mean? Here’s a quick guide.
- The first character indicates the continent where the car was built.
- The second and third characters tell you the auto manufacturer.
- Characters four – eight tell you the vehicle brand, engine size, and engine type.
- The ninth character is a security code used by the manufacturer.
- The tenth character tells you the model year of your N Charlotte Toyota.
- The eleventh character tells you the assembly plant where the car was put together.
- The last set of characters is a serial number that’s unique to your car.

What are VIN numbers used for?
Why are VIN numbers so important, and why is it critical that you know where to find the VIN? Here are some points to consider:
- Your VIN helps to identify your vehicle. If your Toyota gets stolen, the police will be able to use your VIN to identify your car and hopefully get it back to you in one piece.
- You’ll also need to know where to find the VIN if you’re getting car insurance. Car insurance companies use the VIN to match your insurance policy to your car. If you give them the wrong VIN number, your insurance could be invalidated.
- If you’re shopping for used cars near Charlotte, you’re going to want to pull a used vehicle history report on it to see where it’s been before you buy. You’ll need the VIN to pull this type of report.
How to tell if a vehicle is AWD by VIN
Your VIN – as evidenced by our guide above – tells you a lot of information about your car. But do you know how to tell if a vehicle is AWD by VIN? What about other specifications to do with performance? If you want to find out if a car is AWD by its VIN, all you have to do is pull a vehicle history report, like a CarFax report. You can also use an online search tool like the Department of Vehicles’ VIN decoder. Drop your VIN in the search box and you can see all of the car’s specs, including the drivetrain.
